What clearing costs around Springfield
Clearing is priced by density, terrain, access, and what happens to the debris. Lightly overgrown ground (brush, saplings, a few trees) often runs $1,500–$3,000 per acre. Moderately wooded land runs $3,000–$5,000 per acre, and dense timber on rough terrain can go higher. Stump removal, hauling, and finish grading each add cost but leave you with usable ground instead of a rough scar.
Beware of per-acre quotes given sight-unseen. Two acres of cedar thicket and two acres of open oak woods are completely different jobs. Any serious contractor will walk the property before giving you a number.
The Ozarks factors that change the job
Cedar is the defining feature of untended land here. It spreads fast, burns hot, and chokes out everything under it. The upside: cedar clears efficiently with the right equipment, and cleared cedar ground makes some of the best pasture and homesites in the region.
Rock is the other factor. Shallow limestone means stumps don't always pull clean and grading takes real equipment. If your plan includes a building pad, driveway, or septic after clearing, hire a contractor who does dirt work too. Clearing and grading as one job costs less than two mobilizations and ensures the finished grade actually works for what's coming next.
Permits, property lines, and utilities
Most rural residential clearing in our counties needs no permit, but there are exceptions worth checking: clearing in city limits, near streams (the Corps and MDNR care about waterways), and anything in a floodplain. Before work starts, confirm your property lines (old fence lines in the Ozarks are famously not where the deed says) and call 811 so buried utilities get marked. A good contractor handles the 811 call as part of the job.
What 'done' should look like
Agree up front on the finished state: stumps ground or removed, debris hauled or burned or piled, and the ground left rough or finish-graded.
